Every
year in the lovely city of Lowell Massachusetts there is
a traditional event referred to as winter fest. A gathering
of people from amongst the area to get together and enjoy
the freezing cold and the snow. Winter Fest is also normally
located within walking distance from the UMASS Lowell dorms.
For the festival the city closes down the area streets and
begins the preparation for the drunken debauchery to take
place over the coming weekend. As you can |
probably imagine the whole Winter Fest is pretty much
a drinking fest for all of the college students and residents
of the local area. Students and residents gather and mix
to watch the acts, bands, and events of the fest. There
are bond fires lit to keep the festival goers warm. But
if that is not enough there is vendors walking around
dispersing beer amongst the crowds. Or you can take a
walk over to the "bar tent" and get yourself
a shot of the good stuff to keep you really warm. Most
of my buddies are known to sneak in a little something
under the radar if you know what I mean. Over all the
supply of booze and food is never ending you can find
all your favorite festival foods from dogs & burgers
to fried dough at any of the vendor carts lining the streets.
The main event of the Winter Fest has to be the human
dog sled race. For those of you that do not know about
the human dog sled race it is exactly what it sounds like.
Every year local businesses, organizations, and school
sports teams sponsor sled teams. For the past few years
the local "Liquor Shop" has sponsored teams
mostly made of Delta boys. Running in this race has to
be one of the top frat guy activities on the face of the
earth. A drunken mess of out of shape guys running down
a drag strip like track. Some teams dress in costumes
to ad to the humor of it all. This year there was a team
of umpaloopas, a team dressed as dalmatian dogs, a team
wrapped in aluminum foil, and many more weird costumes.
For running in the race there are of coarse prizes that
range from fastest team to best costume.
Of coarse as you imagine having a fest like this does
cause for many celebrations around campus. There are small
parties sprinkled through out the city pubs and the campus
dorms. Some parties are to celebrate a victory of there
sled team while some parties are just to celebrate a good
time had by all at the festival. If you are like me and
enjoy a good celebration Winter Fest in Lowell Massachusetts
is where you need to be in February every year. You can
even register a sled team for a small fee by going to
the city of lowell website. So now it is time to start
prepping for next years sled race.
